A coalition of Houston area activists believes the Houston Police Department pressured the Harris County District Attorney’s Office to fire an employee who claims she was unfairly pulled over and illegally searched. On November 14, 2014 Denise Garcia says she was pulled over by a Houston Police Department officer for an unknown reason. After requesting her drivers license and registration the officer began asking to search her vehicle. The officer removed Ms. Garcia from her vehicle before searching her entire vehicle and trunk. A female officer was eventually called to search Ms. Garcia’s  bra and pants. The officers also went through her wallet and deleted recordings from her cellphone. Ms. Garcia warned the officer that she would seek legal redress for his actions. After being held for over an hour she was finally released with no charges. On November 20, 2014 was put on paid leave and notified of an ongoing investigation by the HCDAO. On December 14, 2014 she was fired. The Greater Houston Coalition for Justice is calling for Ms. Garcia to be  issued an apology, her work record cleared, and reinstated to her position with back pay. The Coalition is made up of groups including, the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas, Black Heritage Society, the Houston Peace and Justice Center, and Council on American Islamic Relations.
