Gun control, it’s been one of the hottest political issues of 2013 and now it’s coming to a City Council near you. In late March, the Austin City Council passed a broadly worded “illegal gun” resolution that supports Mayor Leffingwell’s membership in Mayors Against Illegal Guns, and more importantly, organizes local law enforcement to collaborate with the federal government in tracking down and arresting people who bear so-called “illegal guns.”
When asked about the initiative, this is what Austin Police Department Chief Art Acevedo had to say, ” I’m here today to defend the Second Amendment. To ensure the Second Amendment is not hurt or is not curtailed as a result as our failure as a nation to take pragmatic steps to keep firearms out of the hands of criminals and people not of sound mind.”
Former candidate for Travis County Constable Precinct 2 Michael Cargill responded that, “The only thing they’re trying to do here is to make it harder for the law-abiding citizen to purchase a firearm. They are not doing anything to cut down crime.”
Since the enacting of the resolution Council Member Mike Martinez and Austin Police Chief Acevedo have made visits to Washington, D.C. to advocate for more severe gun control legislation.
