Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott announced that he will not be seeking re-election to the office of attorney general and instead will be running for governor. This statement comes on the heels of Governor Rick Perry’s announcement that he will not be seeking re-election. Greg Abbott, who is known for his tough conservative rhetoric, has sued the Federal Government 27 times. He has vowed to bring the Don’t Mess With Texas attitude to the office of Governor, shielding the state from federal encroachment.
Sunday marked the first stop in a series of campaign rallies meant to stir up support for Abbot’s run. Considering a run on the Democrat ticket is State Senator Wendy Davis, who is currently riding a wave of support for her 11 hour filibuster against the omnibus anti-abortion bill during the last day of the first special session. With Rick Perry stepping down after a decade long tenure, this election is sure to be a heated one.
